Gretchen Boster and Inge Koedoot are SVPs of People at Downtown Music, a global music services company that serves business clients, creators, and artists in 145 countries. Below, as part of Music Business Jobsʼ Career Advice section, they share practical tips for job seekers looking to break into the music industry.

Tip 1: Learn First, Level Later

If you donʼt land your dream role on day one, thatʼs okay.

The music business is complex and can take time to understand, and time to grow into. Be open to getting your foot in the door, even if the role doesnʼt match the level or title youʼve held before. Your first role is your entry point. How you show up and grow from there is the real opportunity.

Weʼve seen so many people start in more junior roles, without resumes that perfectly match the spec. But they come in with curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm, and that matters.

Tip 2: Interview the Interviewer

The interview is a chance for the company to assess you, but also for you to assess the company.

Ask the questions that matter to you. What does a typical day look like? How flexible is the schedule across time zones? Whatʼs the team dynamic like? Interviews are your chance to get curious and make sure the company fits your values, work style, and goals.

Finding the right match is as much about whether they want you as it is whether you want to be there, and grow with them.

Tip 3: Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Imposter syndrome is real, but so is professional growth. The best career moves often happen just outside your comfort zone.

Show that you’re curious, adaptable, and open to learning as you go.

If you donʼt check every box on the job description, consider applying anyway. Show that youʼre curious, adaptable, and open to learning as you go. A lot of the time potential is more important than perfection on a resume.
