Vevo tops 10bn views in January

Online music video platform Vevo has clocked up more than 10 billion monthly views for the first time in its history.

In January, the service amassed 10,335,997,898 video views, which represented an 86% increase year-on-year. In January 2014, it pulled in 5.4 billion views.

Vevo put the milestone down to growth in its mobile and connected TV views, which it says now account for almost half of its viewer activity (49.5%).

It did particularly well in the US, where Vevo pulled in more than 2bn views in the month. That’s almost double the 1.2bn US views it enjoyed a year before.

Mexico, which is Vevo’s second biggest territory despite only launching early last year, is now contributing more than a billion views each month.

Across the globe in January, 23 videos achieved Vevo’s CERTIFIED stamp, meaning they surpassed 100 million views.

The past year has seen numerous rumours that Vevo’s owners – including stakeholders Sony Music and Universal Music – are keen to sell the company.

However, no buyer has been secured. Some suggest that’s because Vevo is in something of a bind: Re/Code reported last year that between its major label investors, Google and music publishers, it pays out 90% of revenue. It continues to be a loss-making company.Music Business Worldwide
