Universal launches popularity contest on Spotify in Sweden

Universal Music is behind a new competition for unsigned artists in Sweden, which rewards the most popular performers on Spotify with the chance to win studio time and appear on a Digster streaming playlist.

Stream Your Dream, launched by Universal’s amateur artist distribution platform Spinnup, challenges acts to attract the highest number of streams possible for their track between May 11-17 this year.

Spinnup will distribute the track onto Spotify for the entrants.

The three artists who prove most popular will then go through to a final at Gota Cellar in Stockholm, where a professional jury of A&Rs from Universal Music – plus representatives from Spinnup and Scandinavian music magazine GAFFA – will choose a winner.

This victor will then be given the chance to record and master their winning track in Soundtrade Studios, which has played host to the likes of Robyn and Coldplay. Their track will also be mixed by a professional engineer.

Crucially, the song will also be added to Universal’s Digster FRESH playlist, with over 150,000 followers on Spotify.

In addition, a marketing package will be created by Universal that includes a promo video and press images.

And, presumably, Universal will obviously consider signing the track if it receieves that dreaded word ‘traction’ online.

To enter, artists should upload their track on Spinnup using the code Stream Your Dream, before April 12 and set the release date of their track to May 4.

Spinnup distributes tracks globally on platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Deezer, Rhapsody and Tidal.

Due to its connection to Universal, the major says that a network of scouts look out for talent on the service, ready to tip off UMG’s label A&R teams.Music Business Worldwide
