UMPG hires Adam Fujiki as Director of A&R in Canada

Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has hired Adam Fujiki to head the company’s publishing operation in Canada in a new role as Director, Creative/A&R.

Fujiki (pictured) assumes the position effective immediately, as UMPG’s respected executive Shawn Marino moves over to the label side as VP of A&R at Universal Music Canada.

Based in Toronto, Fujiki will report to Evan Lamberg, UMPG President – North America, as well as locally to Jeffrey Remedios, Universal Music Canada President & CEO.

In his new position, Fujiki will work closely with the company’s worldwide A&R team to identify, sign and develop talent and bolster global creative opportunities for UMPG songwriters.

With 13 years broad experience in A&R, development, music production and management, Fujiki was most recently a creative executive with producer/manager Doc McKinney and DM2 Management, where he supported Corbin (FKA Spooky Black) and Psymun.

Prior to this, he held various creative roles at Sony Music Entertainment Canada, including a stint as Acting Head of A&R.

At Sony Fujiki was responsible for overseeing projects with such artists and songwriters as No Warning, Bedouin Soundclash, Sloan, The Mark Inside, Classified, Projet Orange, The New Cities, Jay Malinowski, Zaki Ibrahim, Michael Rault, Young Empires, A Tribe Called Red, and Tyler Shaw, as well as contestants from Canadian Idol.

He was also lead creative at Sony with Pirates Blend Records and instrumental in Sony’s distribution deal with Buzz Records.

“ADAM is one of the most songwriter and artist friendly creative executives I have met in a long time.”

“I want to thank Doc McKinney for the introduction to Adam. I also want to thank Shawn Marino for his years of great contributions to our company.

Said Remedios: “Having known Adam from afar for years, I’m looking forward to working closely together. His creative instincts and energies will support and match our culture. Canadian songwriters and producers have never been more ascendant – and artists are at the center of who we are as a company.

“This is no less true in label-side A&R, where Shawn will continue to prove a valued executive and champion of homegrown talent. I’ve enjoyed the process and product of our relationship this past year and confidently expect that to continue in our new capacity,”

Said Fujiki: “I’m grateful to Evan Lamberg for the opportunity to join this world class team and very excited to be a part of UMPG and the Universal Music family.

“Canada has proven to cultivate some of the most successful, influential and respected artists, producers and songwriters in the world. I’m excited to work alongside Jeffrey Remedios and Shawn Marino, and honoured to be in the position to develop and nurture a new generation of Canadian creatives,”

Said Marino: “I’ve enjoyed an immensely rewarding experience at UMPG and am proud to entrust our amazing roster of talent into the sure hands of Adam.

“I’m energized by the A&R responsibilities that lie ahead, working with our unparalleled team in continuing to develop and break the best artists in Canada,”Music Business Worldwide
