TikTok is hiring for a ‘rock star’ Head of Music in Australia

Continuing its rapid global expansion, TikTok is currently recruiting for a “rock star” Head of Music in Sydney.

The successful candidate will support the platform’s music strategy and drive the success of Australian music on TikTok.

According to an online job ad spotted by MBW, this person will be required to “build strong relationships and lines of communication with key contacts at record labels along with internal stakeholders at all levels, including regional offices, analytics, operations and headquarters”.

The successful candidate will also “manage business partnerships with all day-to-day contacts for record labels and artist management teams within the Australia & New Zealand markets” and will be required to have a deep understanding of music licensing landscape in Australia & New Zealand”.

TikTok’s ideal candidate will have at least 12 years’ relevant experience, gained from either working at a label or distributor, or directly within artist management.

According to data published by market research firm Roy Morgan in February, over 1.6 million Australians (at the time of that report’s publication) were visiting short-form video platform TikTok each month, which equated to 7% of the population aged 6 and older.

Speaking at the time, Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine noted that amongst Gen Alpha (those aged 6-13), TikTok was more widely used than Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

Last week we learned that TikTok parent Bytedance generated more than $17bn in gross revenues last year (according to Bloomberg), alongside a $3bn+ net profit.

We also found out last week that Bytedance has reportedly agreed a 10-year lease for 232,000 square feet of New York office space in Manhattan’s Times Square.

Following reports in January that Bytedance was on the hunt for a US-based CEO for TikTok, it was revealed last month that Kevin Mayer, Disney’s highest-ranking streaming executive has been appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ByteDance, in addition to serving as CEO of TikTok.

Meanwhile, in December, Ole Obermann joined TikTok as Vice President, Global Head of Music.

The TikTok app has now been downloaded over 2bn times globally, and 500m times in the five months to end of April.Music Business Worldwide
