TikTok builds a Taylor Swift ‘Patient Zero’ hub – as her video rollout keeps skipping YouTube

TikTok is asking Taylor Swift‘s fans to work together to unlock behind-the-scenes footage from her Patient Zero music video.

The clips form part of a new in-app experience built around The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of Swift‘s 2025 album.

The Encore arrived last Friday (September 25), adding four tracks to the original album’s 12: lead single Patient Zero, plus Cleveland!, Pink Clouding, and Babylon.

The experience launched alongside the album. Fans who search “Taylor Swift” or “Patient Zero” in the app are directed to a dedicated Search Hub.

TikTok set out how it works on Wednesday (September 30), saying it will “continue to unfold in phases” over the coming week.

“The experience began through a curtain-inspired Easter egg,” said TikTok. “But that’s only the first reveal.

“Over the coming week, the Patient Zero experience will continue to unfold in phases, with three behind-the-scenes unlocks giving fans more to discover along the way.”

Fans will be able to return to the hub as new moments are revealed, according to TikTok.

Individual users can also unlock an exclusive Taylor Swift profile frame by completing a series of actions across the platform.

Those include following the @taylorswift and @taylornation accounts, saving Patient Zero to their music app, posting a video using the song, and listening to full tracks on TikTok, the company said.

The behind-the-scenes clips, meanwhile, sit behind a collective goal set by TikTok.

“Some moments will take the whole fandom,” said TikTok.

The ByteDance-owned platform is asking fans to gather friends and share the experience in order to reveal what it calls “exclusive behind-the-scenes music video clips.”

The hub will also host official videos, the full tracklist, and a Fan Spotlight section.

The activation is the latest in a line of in-app campaigns TikTok has built around Swift‘s releases.

Around the original album’s release in October 2025, TikTok ran a month-long hub for The Life of a Showgirl, alongside a fan installation at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles that ran from October 3 to October 9.

Fans who completed every mission – including following @taylorswift, joining the Taylor Nation Bulletin Board, saving tracks, and creating videos with album sounds – gained access to content behind a virtual door that opened on release day, October 3, 2025.

Before that, TikTok launched an in-app experience for The Tortured Poets Department in April 2024.

That campaign arrived a little over a week after Swift‘s music began reappearing on the platform, amid Universal Music Group‘s licensing dispute with TikTok, as MBW reported at the time.

It also offered a Fan Spotlight carousel, plus challenges that let users unlock exclusive artwork for their profiles.

Swift‘s audience on the platform has grown across those campaigns.

She had more than 25.3 million followers and 223.7 million likes in April 2024, according to figures MBW reported at the time.

By October 2025, TikTok put those numbers at over 32.7 million followers and 253.2 million likes.

The company now says Swift has over 33.4 million followers and 278.6 million likes.

“The numbers don’t lie: TikTok has become a place where fans experience her eras in real-time,” TikTok said in its post, adding that the platform “is where Swifties gather to decode & duet.”

The TikTok push comes as Swift continues to hand different platforms different windows on her video content.

She premiered the Opalite video on Spotify Premium and Apple Music on February 6 this year, holding it back from YouTube until February 8.

The Elizabeth Taylor video followed on March 31, again on Spotify Premium and Apple Music, with no YouTube version at launch.

I Knew It, I Knew You, Swift‘s contribution to the Toy Story 5 soundtrack on Walt Disney Records, took the same route on June 5.

On September 16, all 58 of Swift’s official music videos became available to Spotify Premium subscribers.

The Patient Zero video went further still. Swift, who directed it herself, premiered it on television at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, after collecting the inaugural Artist Director Honors, then released it to Spotify Premium, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. The full video stayed off YouTube until September 29.

The windowing follows YouTube‘s withdrawal from Billboard‘s US charts, which took effect after January 16.

Views on YouTube now carry no weight on the Hot 100 or the Billboard 200.

The Life of a Showgirl, released via Universal Music Group‘s Republic Records, debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 in October 2025 with 4.002 million equivalent album units.

Its first-week US pure album sales of over 3.4 million copies broke the modern-era record previously held by Adele‘s 25, which moved 3.378 million units in its opening week in November 2015, Billboard reported at the time, citing Luminate data.Music Business Worldwide
