Thando Makhunga appointed Managing Director of Downtown subsidiary Sheer Publishing Africa

Thando Makhunga has been named Managing Director of Sheer Publishing Africa, which was acquired by Downtown Music Holdings in 2020.

Based in Johannesburg, Makhunga will report directly to Mike Smith, Global President of Downtown Music Services, a division of Downtown that offers bespoke distribution, publishing administration, marketing and finance solutions to creators.

Her appointment is effective immediately.

In her new role, Makhunga has a remit to “optimize the company’s business development in the region” by “leveraging the expertise, services and technology at Sheer to provide increased value for African creators”, says the company.

Sheer also says its focus is to “fully embrace and enable” a growing demand for African music, and to improve its accessibility, commercial opportunities and global reach.

Sheer was established in 1996.

Makhunga’s hiring follows the June 2021 appointment of Sheer Founder David Alexander to Senior Vice President, New Markets, at Downtown Music Holdings.

 

Makhunga joins Downtown Music Services from her previous role of Station Manager of 947, a commercial regional radio station in South Africa.

Hr career began at coastal brand East Coast Radio, which then led to roles at KFM 94.5 in the Western Cape, Vuma FM in Kwazulu Natal and Group Music Manager at Primedia Broadcasting.
