The company owns or administers over a million copyrights, covering genres such as country, blues, jazz, pop, Latin, and rock‘n’roll.

A family-run company, peermusic was founded by Ralph S. Peer in 1928 as Southern Music Publishing Company, Inc., with headquarters in New York City.

After Ralph S. Peer’s death in the early 1960s, peermusic was run by his wife Monique as CEO for the next two decades.

Ralph Peer II then became CEO of peermusic, guiding the company through a period of global expansion and well into the streaming era.

In December 2020, peermusic announced that Ralph Peer II had relinquished his role as CEO after 37 years, moving to a position as Executive Chair.
