Sun-Ui Yum named Principal at Matt Pincus-led investment company, MUSIC

Sun-Ui Yum has been named Principal at Matt Pincus’ investment house, MUSIC.

In this newly-created role, Yum will report directly to Pincus, and will help to identify and negotiate investment opportunities for MUSIC.

Matt Pincus quietly launched MUSIC in partnership with Liontree as an investment house focused on the music business, after exiting SONGS Music Publishing, which was sold to Kobalt Capital for around $160 million in 2017.

Since 2019, MUSIC has made investments in firms such as music-making platform Splice as well as music financial services company HIFI.

MUSIC was officially relaunched earlier this year. The company raised $200 million in “initial” capital as it officially re-launched as a partnership between Pincus and Liontree, plus two new investors – JS Capital Management and Schusterman Family Investments.

Before joining MUSIC, Yum served as an investor and advisor on the music coverage team at media and entertainment merchant bank Raine Group.

At Raine Group, says MUSIC, Yum helped work on “key deals” such as Raine’s previous investment in SoundCloud, and the 2021 sale of Downtown Music Publishing’s owned music copyright catalog to Concord, a deal worth around $400 million.

Yum also previously worked as a freelance music journalist and critic, interviewing such artists as Juice WRLD, Offset, SAINT JHn and others.

“When I set out to staff up at MUSIC, Sun-Ui was my first call.”

“He understands that relationships and repertoire drive value in music and has the analytical mind and business discipline to fit them into to an investment context.

“That is an exceedingly rare combination. When I set out to staff up at MUSIC, Sun-Ui was my first call.”

“It’s been a lifelong career objective to merge my personal and professional passions for music.”
