Spotify launches cloud-based podcast studio, Soundtrap for Storytellers

“Over time, more than 20% of all Spotify listening will be non-music content”.

You may have seen the above stat from Spotify boss Daniel Ek a few months ago when he wrote about the streaming company’s content strategy, which would see it ramp up its focus on podcasts going forward.

Spotify’s podcast company acquisitions, including Gimlet Media, Anchor and Parcast as well as tests involving podcast placements into personalized playlists this year all point towards Spotify’s ‘Audio-First’ future as described by Ek in that blog post.

The streaming company is clear that it wants more podcasts on the platform then – and today (May 14) Spotify’s Head of Creator Marketplace Charlie Hellman has added (see below) that its “mission” is also to grow the number of podcast creators worldwide.

To achieve this, Spotify via Soundtrap – the Stockholm-based ‘online recording studio’ company that it acquired in November 2017 – has launched a podcast recording, editing and publishing tool called Soundtrap for Storytellers.

Soundtrap for Storytellers is described as ‘a comprehensive podcast creation solution’ that offers recording; remote multi-track interviewing with video chat; ‘smart transcribing and editing’ of spoken-word audio files as a text document; full audio production capabilities, the publishing of its transcript to optimize SEO, and the publishing of the podcast to Spotify.

According to a statement, “Soundtrap for Storytellers allows podcasters to focus on the art of storytelling by significantly reducing the time and investment typically needed to make podcasts sound professional”.

The full suite of services can be accessed via desktop, and a select set of recording and editing features is available on iOS and Android.

The service is priced at $14.99/month with an annual plan costing $11.99/month.

“The Soundtrap team has done a fantastic job with this new product. Part of Spotify’s mission is to grow the number of creators able to build podcasts worldwide.”

Per Emanuelsson, Co-Founder, Soundtrap said:  “Soundtrap was created to redefine collaborative music making, and now we’re bringing that same expertise to podcast creation with Soundtrap for Storytellers.

“The platform itself was built around solving some of the biggest pain points for podcasters – editing, transcribing, remote interviewing and adding sound effects – and providing one, streamlined platform that contains every part of the podcast creation process.”
