Spotify introduced text-based commands for its AI DJ feature, allowing Premium subscribers to type in music requests instead of voice commands.
The update announced Wednesday (October 15) also enables Spanish-language requests through DJ Livi, the platform’s Spanish-speaking AI host launched in July 2024.
Spotify added voice commands to its AI DJ earlier this year, expanding the feature’s original design of playing algorithmically selected tracks. Until now, voice requests were limited to the English-language version.
The shift to text input comes amid industry-wide changes in how users interact with AI assistants. AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini have largely relied on text inputs, but still allow users to switch to speaking and uploading files.
For Spotify, text input addresses some limitations of voice commands. Some users stream music while commuting, in quiet environments, or in situations where speaking aloud is restricted.
Over a week ago, Spotify and ChatGPT announced a new integration, allowing Spotify Free and Premium users to link their accounts to ChatGPT and receive personalized music and podcast recommendations directly within their ChatGPT conversations. The integration lets users request specific tracks, albums or playlists, or ask for recommendations based on mood or genre.
The update also comes as Spotify reported increased engagement with the AI DJ. In May, the company said engagement with the AI DJ feature has “nearly doubled over the past year,” without providing specific metrics.
Along with text input, Spotify added personalized prompt suggestions to help users who are unsure what to request. The system generates three suggestions based on listening history and current context, such as “reggaeton beats for an energetic afternoon” or “refreshing surf rock for a midday break.”
Spanish-speaking users can now interact with DJ Livi using similar prompts, asking for “clásicos de reggaetón de los 2000” or “canciones tranqui para desconectarte.”
“These latest enhancements are all about giving listeners more ways to interact with DJ and make each session their own.”

Users can also request specific genres, moods, artists, or activities. The system accepts requests like “play some cozy folk music for fall” or “give me spooky tunes for my Halloween party.”
To use the feature, Premium subscribers can search for “DJ” in the Spotify app and press play. The AI DJ begins with a selection of music and commentary. Users can tap a DJ button in the bottom right corner to submit new requests via voice or text.
The feature is available in more than 60 markets globally, supporting both English and Spanish requests.

In Q2 2025, Spotify’s total number of monthly active users, which combine paying users and ad-supported users, grew 11% YoY to 696 million, while its Premium subscriber base rose by 8 million from Q1 2025 to 276 million in Q2 2025.
