Simon Barnabas named MD of Universal’s UMTV

Simon Barnabas is joining Universal Music UK as Managing Director of its UMTV division.

Barnabas joins the label after a successful 16-year run at Sony Music, most recently as Marketing Director. As MD of UMTV he will report to Universal Music UK chairman and CEO David Joseph.

Barnabas is taking over at renowned compilations labels UMTV as it evolves to establish leading playlist brands and successful artist projects.

Since 2013 the label has been led by Adam Corke, who has now been promoted to a new wide-ranging international role as VP, Commercial Affairs at UMG, reporting to Universal Music Group’s SVP Commercial Affairs Ross Foster.

At Sony, Barnabas personally curated a run of chart-topping compilations which between them sold over 4.5 million copies.

His team’s releases ranged from EDM, Dancehall Reggae and 80s classics, to partnerships with Kiss FM and The X Factor. He also created the platinum-selling, Music Week Marketing Award-winning ‘Collection’ brand, to which he signed DJs Fatboy Slim, Trevor Nelson, Pete Tong and Grandmaster Flash.

Beyond compilations, Barnabas has overseen number ones for artists including George Michael, Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Clarkson, Anastacia and Usher.

He is perhaps best known for steering the marketing for Michael Jackson on numerous multi-platinum projects since 2002.

Barnabas started his music industry career at Virgin Records, before embarking on his successful run at Sony. Throughout his career he has also worked internationally as a DJ.
