Rob Wells backs cloud-based music intelligence platform

Universal’s former President Of Global Digital Business, Rob Wells, has joined the Advisory Board of Revelator, a cloud-based platform that provides sales and marketing intelligence to artists, producers and labels for a subscription fee.

Wells, who left Universal earlier this year, is credited with building the company’s digital business from its infancy into a global leader.

Joining him on Revelator’s board is Tom Ryan, the former Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Development at EMI.

Israel-born Revelator integrates sales, marketing, reporting, and analytics into one system to help both independent artists and record labels run a business cost-efficiently – and learn where to focus their attention.

“Analytics and data are becoming increasingly important in the music world, and it is crucial that all artists have open and transparent access to this information either independently or through their record label,” said Bruno Guez, Founder and CEO of Revelator.

“Rob and Tom understand this vision and have the experience necessary to help us bring it to fruition via Revelator. We have already made significant strides with our all-in-one solution and look forward to working with them to make it even better.”

“Data is the name of the game, and we’ll be focusing all our energies into making it affordable and advantageous for labels.”

In a 15-year career at Universal Music Group, Wells defined the company’s strategy in digital, with responsibility for digital, licensing deals, and investments.

He also created the company’s Artist Portal program, aiming to bring more transparency to UMG’s artist community.

“Over the years, I’ve watched the digital music business evolve considerably and have been fortunate enough to have a hand in shaping it,” said Wells.

“Now, I look forward to impacting the business again with Revelator. Data is the name of the game, and we’ll be focusing all our energies into making it affordable and advantageous for all artists, labels, and other music companies to have this information accessible and easy to understand.”

Tom Ryan is currently CEO and Co-Founder of internet television platform Pluto TV and a Board Member at mobile music creation company Smule and apparel company Threadless, where he also served as CEO for four years.

Ryan has also served on the boards of Trunk Club and Society6 and worked as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Bessemer Venture Partners, Mobile Music Consultant at Virgin Mobile USA, and Advisor at eMusic.

He co-founded his first company, CDuctive, in 1996, serving as Chief Music Officer before selling the company to eMusic in a $38 million stock transaction in November 1999.

“Revelator stands alone in the label services field as a business solution that truly does it all,” said Ryan.

“I’m looking forward to putting my experience in music, commerce, and technology to work helping the Revelator team improve and grow their great product.”

Wells and Ryan join an Advisory Board that also includes  Island Records founder Chris Blackwell and Omri Dolev, a seasoned digital media and marketing executive and co-founder of Lev Group Media – Warner Music Israel.Music Business Worldwide
