Official: Guy Moot and Carianne Marshall to take charge of Warner/Chappell Music

It’s long been rumored – and now it’s fact.

Warner Music Group has officially confirmed, via an internal memo today (January 9), that long-time Sony/ATV exec Guy Moot is to become CEO and co-Chair of Warner/Chappell Music.

Respected British exec Moot will take the reins alongside Carianne Marshall, who joined Los Angeles-based Warner/Chappell as COO last year following her prior tenure as a Partner at SONGS Music Publishing.

Marshall (pictured right) is now promoted to COO and co-Chair of Warner/Chappell, while Moot (pictured left) leaves behind his role as President, Worldwide Creative at Sony/ATV, as well as his concurrent position as UK Managing Director of the Sony company.

The duo will jointly replace outgoing Warner/Chappell boss Jon Platt, who will become CEO and Chairman of Sony/ATV in March, succeeding his one-time mentor, Martin Bandier.

Bandier has said he will “share what’s ahead for me soon” following his departure from Sony/ATV, the world’s biggest music publisher, after 12 years.

Hi everyone,

Many of you will have seen the speculation in the press, so I wanted you to hear from me as soon as possible about the leadership of Warner/Chappell. A formal announcement will be made at the appropriate time, but I’m excited to say that Guy Moot will be joining us in the first half of the year as Co-Chair & CEO, while Carianne Marshall is being promoted to Co-Chair & COO. Both Guy and Carianne will report to me.

This leadership duo will be unlike any other in music publishing, and help us emphasize our unique approach at Warner/Chappell. It will give us real creative and commercial advantages as we sign and develop a new generation of world-class hit-makers, open up fresh opportunities for our legendary catalog, and mentor a winning team. Steve Cooper, Warner Music Group

Guy comes to Warner/Chappell from Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where he has been President, Worldwide Creative & UK Managing Director. Carianne joined the company this past June, having been a Principal Partner at independent music publisher SONGS. Her new appointment is effective immediately, and she’ll be running the company with me until Guy’s arrival. Guy is planning to be based in London as well as in LA, with Carianne, at Warner Music Group’s new downtown offices.

I want to thank the entire team at Warner/Chappell for doing an outstanding job during this transition, continuing to work tirelessly to provide unparalleled service to songwriters across the globe. I know that Guy and Carianne will be fantastic partners in continuing to transform the company and pioneer the future of music.

If you’re interested in learning more about Guy and Carianne, I’ve included bios on them below. Congratulations to them both!

Guy Moot

In the course of a distinguished and influential music career over more than 30 years, Guy Moot has signed some of the biggest songwriters in the world, including Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey, Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers, Arctic Monkeys, Jamiroquai, Arcade Fire, StarGate, Deadmau5, Sia, Paul Epworth, and Sean Paul; as well as overseeing the signings of current chart toppers Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Sam Smith, Charli XCX, Anne-Marie, Nile Rodgers, and Jorja Smith.

After starting his career in 1984 with A&R roles at both ATV Music and Chrysalis Records, he joined SBK Music Publishing in 1987, ahead of its merger with EMI two years later. Over the next sixteen years, Guy rose through the ranks of EMI Music Publishing, before being appointed Executive Vice President of A&R for the UK and Europe in 2003.

Two years later, he became Managing Director of EMI Music Publishing UK and President of European Creative. Guy’s leadership played a key role in ensuring that EMI was named Music Week Publisher of the Year for fourteen years running.

In 2012, Guy took on additional responsibilities, leading the Sony/ATV and EMI Music Publishing merger across Europe. In this new role, he was tasked with developing greater effectiveness in A&R across both companies.

Then, in 2017, after a string of creative and commercial successes, Moot was appointed President of Worldwide Creative, heading up the company’s efforts to seek out the best songwriting talent, regardless of their country of origin. At the same time, he continued in his role as Managing Director in the UK, and led the company to a record-breaking, year-long hold on the UK Number 1 Singles spot in 2016-17.

Carianne Marshall

Prior to joining Warner/Chappell this past June, Carianne Marshall was Principal Partner, Head of Creative Services, and Head of Creative Licensing at SONGS, the acclaimed independent music publisher. She joined SONGS in 2006, helping build a roster of over 300 songwriters, including Lorde, The Weeknd, Diplo, DJ Mustard, and many others.

Marshall served as the company’s executive leader on the West Coast, consistently posting double-digit revenue growth, while overseeing a creative licensing staff responsible for placing compositions by SONGS’ writers in film, television, commercials, video games, and other visual media. She was also responsible for developing and nurturing the company’s non-top 40 roster. Marshall has been named to Billboard’s prestigious Women in Music list for the past four years running.

Marshall previously spent three years as Director of Motion Picture and Television Music for Universal Music Publishing Group, prior to which she worked in the Film/Television Music division of DreamWorks Music Publishing from 2000 to 2003. Marshall began her music industry career at Los Angeles-based VOX Productions, where she did live music production, while managing and booking local bands. In 1996, she joined Elektra Entertainment Group, working in Marketing & College Radio Promotion.
