Music creation platform Splice has launched a new mobile experience, allowing creators to browse, audition, and craft music directly from their phones.

Splice — valued in 2021 at nearly USD $500 million after securing $55 million in funding, according to Bloomberg — has played a significant role in the do-it-yourself music creation scene since its launch in 2013.

Splice Mobile, now available on iOS and Android, merges the company’s sample library with artificial intelligence-powered ‘Create’ technology, the company said in a press release on Wednesday (March 6). The app lets users access an expansive library boasting over 300 instruments across 140 unique genres.

The app also boasts a range of features, including the ability to curate sounds into personalized collections, and create multi-layered compositions with up to eight instruments. Users can share their creations with friends and collaborators, fine-tune their mixes with volume and tempo controls, and easily export their work for further editing in any DAW.

“This new mobile experience is another path for our customers to bring new ideas to life anytime, anywhere – without losing any of the quality they’ve come to rely on from Splice.”

Additionally, Splice Mobile allows users to save their projects and seamlessly switch between the mobile and desktop versions without losing any progress.

“We believe that great ideas should never be confined by time or space,” said Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava.

“We continue to be led by our customer’s desire to integrate Splice sounds deeper in their workflows. This new mobile experience is another path for our customers to bring new ideas to life anytime, anywhere – without losing any of the quality they’ve come to rely on from Splice.”

The company has partnered with producer and rapper Terrace Martin — known for producing records for a number of prominent artists in the music industry, including Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Stevie Wonder, and others — to showcase the creative potential of Splice Mobile.

Martin highlights the app’s ease of use, stating,  “I didn’t even need band members. What makes Splice’s Create function amazing, you don’t need a keyboard, you don’t need a computer, you don’t even need a studio. So long as your phone is charged.”

Splice says its core value lies in blending human-made sounds with powerful technology. Splice Mobile “ensures that inspiration is always in reach, so musicians can capture creativity whenever it strikes, allowing customers to capture and organize creative ideas, accessing them anywhere,” the company said.

The Splice Mobile app is available for free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play. While a free account grants basic functionality, a Splice Sounds subscription unlocks the full potential of the app, including unlimited sound downloads, exclusive samples and presets, and advanced collaboration features.

The launch of the app follows some recent projects by Splice, including the launch of a new label that represents South Asian samples and sounds.
