Larry Mattera has been appointed General Manager of Capitol Records, the flagship label of Capitol Music Group (CMG), and Executive Vice President of CMG.

Today’s news was announced by CMG Chairman & CEO Jeff Vaughn, to whom Mattera will report.

The news follows last month’s announcement that Capitol Music Group (CMG) Chairman & CEO Steve Barnett will retire on December 31, 2020 and that Jeff Vaughn and Michelle Jubelirer will serve as CMG’s next leaders.

In his newly-created GM position, Mattera will draw upon his extensive background and strong leadership and management skills to helm the day-to-day operations of CMG’s flagship label.

In his broader EVP role, he will help strategize and navigate CMG’s future course as a key member of Vaughn’s executive management team.

Mattera is based in Hollywood within the Capitol Tower.

Prior to joining CMG, Mattera was most recently General Manager and Executive Vice President of Commerce & Marketing at Warner Records.

With his ascension to that position in 2016, Mattera added oversight of all areas of marketing to his portfolio, including product management, strategic and brand marketing, research and analytics and touring and artist development.

He was responsible for overseeing label operations and all artist and new release campaigns, including hugely successful projects from Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha, Lil Pump, Jason Derulo, Lukas Graham, Gorillaz, Gary Clark Jr, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Michael Bublé and Josh Groban.

“Larry is a forward thinking and highly experienced music executive who’s been at the forefront of innovative approaches to marketing music his entire career.”

Mattera joined Warner Records in 2015 as Executive Vice President, Commerce & Digital Marketing, overseeing the label’s commercial activities across all traditional and digital platforms, with responsibility for digital marketing initiatives and strategy.

These responsibilities enabled him to lead innovative approaches in building artists’ careers while helping transform the company amidst the industry’s evolution into a streaming-based economy. Mattera had previously served as Senior Vice President of Global Digital Accounts at WEA, Warner Music Group’s global artist and label service arm, for eight years, having joined that company in 2007.

Beginning in 2005, Mattera spent two years at Amp’d Mobile as Senior Vice President of Music Strategy, where his responsibilities included conceiving and executing that company’s overall strategy in the music space, negotiating licensing deals with all major and independent labels and distributors, establishing music programming and merchandising concepts and developing and managing commercial mobile music products.

Mattera spent six years at Island Def Jam, beginning in 1999, where he created the company’s New Media Department and was at the forefront in establishing the first digital marketing and commerce efforts at the record company level. He began his career in 1994 at Epic Records before moving to Polygram Group Distribution in 1996 for three years.

CMG Chairman & CEO Jeff Vaughn, said: “Larry is a forward thinking and highly experienced music executive who’s been at the forefront of innovative approaches to marketing music his entire career.

“He’s established an exceptional track record of building strong teams, and brings his passion for artists and music to his work every day. I’m thrilled that Larry has joined our Capitol family and I welcome him to the Tower.“

“I want to thank Jeff for this incredible opportunity to join a label that has long been home to some of the greatest and most culturally relevant artists in the history of the music business.”

“I know that my experience and progressive approach to developing and breaking artists in a streaming-centric marketplace perfectly complements Jeff’s vision for Capitol Records.

“I’m also looking forward to playing an integral role as a member of Jeff and Michelle Jubelirer’s CMG executive management team, and working closely with such an impressive group of passionate music professionals. “Music Business Worldwide
