NYU – Visiting Assistant Professor, Music Business (non-tenure), Full-Time (US)

The New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions invites applications for a non-tenure-track visiting assistant professor position in the Music Business Program to begin in September 2022.

Teach existing courses and develop new courses on the undergraduate and graduate levels in: music and advanced technology (AR, VR, and games), global music management, emerging models and markets for music, music and cultural studies, concert promotion and ticketing, music publishing, and the international music business. Other duties include undergraduate capstone project supervision, masters’ final project supervision, academic and career advisement, developing and maintaining professional bridges to the music industry, student recruitment, and program administration. Participation in faculty meetings, committees, and other service appropriate to a university faculty member is required.

Rank, Salary, and Starting Date:

Visiting Full-Time (up to three year appointment), non-tenure track. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting Date: September 1, 2022.

About The Department of Music & Performing Arts Professions and The Music Business Program:

The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions was established in the Steinhardt School at New York University in 1925. In 1968, the Department merged with the New York College of Music, the oldest conservatory of music in New York City. Since that merger, the Department has functioned both as the conservatory of music and a locus of research in the performing arts. Today, 1,500 students—baccalaureate through doctoral—major in: classical, jazz and music theatre performance; music composition (jazz, film scoring, multi-media, and traditional), music technology, and music business; music ed, dance ed, and educational theatre education; performing arts administration; and music therapy and drama therapy guided by more than 400 faculty. Faculty and students share a spirit of openness and innovation encouraging the pursuit of high artistic goals. Department interests cross school lines and bring performers and composers together with choreographers, directors, actors, librettists, and filmmakers in innovative, collaborative projects often reviewed by the New York media. Music business students study with world-renowned faculty through private lessons and participate in ensembles, master classes and live performances. Distinguished Department alumni include: Jazz great Wayne Shorter, Tony Award winners Cy Coleman and Betty Comden, composer and conductor Tania Leon, music technologist Enoch Light, and Academy Award, Pulitzer Prize, and Tony Award winner John Patrick Shanley.

Founded in 1976, the NYU Steinhardt Music Business program prepares both graduate and undergraduate students to be leaders in the dynamic, global music marketplace. Academically rigorous and cross-disciplinary by definition, the Music Business course of study combines the boundless artistic resources of New York City with the cutting-edge inquiry and innovation of a major research university. The curriculum includes a foundation in music theory and history as well as business, taught in collaboration with NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. In addition to providing structured courses, the curriculum promotes individual choices and development through an interactive classroom atmosphere, internships, participation in our record company, Village Records, and completion of research requirements.

PhD, MBA, JD or other postbaccalaureate degree is required. Background in music business or in the music industry is required including familiarity with music production and the creative professions. Full-time commitment to teaching and advisement is required. Strong track record of teaching at the university level is required.
