The NYU Steinhardt Music Business program invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position to begin in September 2023. We seek applicants that, through their scholarly activities, can contribute to methods and foundational knowledge in music business, with a strong focus on music and data.
Areas of interest include the application of data science in improving outcomes for industry stakeholders, performance gains in equity-seeking music industry workspaces and music infrastructure and ecosystems in cities.
Research active candidates in other areas at the intersection of music, industry, cultural studies, entrepreneurship and capital markets are encouraged to apply.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $80,000 – $135,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Conduct an active program of sponsored research engaging public funding sources, industry partners, and/or entrepreneurial activities, with a goal of making regular, high-impact contributions to research in publications in top-tier venues.
The successful candidate will be expected to support and mentor undergraduate and masters students and be a leading member of the NYU Music Business community. The ideal candidate will have an active commitment to scholarly work with a significant potential to benefit society and the music industry, and to defining and developing the research agenda of the NYU Music Business program.
Candidates will contribute to the teaching mission of NYU by teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students, developing interdisciplinary courses; and leading seminars, workshops and other public programming for students, faculty and community members. The successful candidate will participate in faculty meetings and serve on department, school and/or university committees.
Other duties include undergraduate capstone project supervision, masters’ final project supervision, academic and career advisement, developing and maintaining professional bridges to the music industry, student recruitment and program administration.
Participation in faculty meetings, committees, and other service appropriate to a university faculty member is required.
The Department and Music Business
The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions was established in the Steinhardt School at New York University in 1925. In 1968, the Department merged with the New York College of Music, the oldest conservatory of music in New York City.
Since that merger, the Department has functioned both as the conservatory of music and a locus of research in the performing arts. Today, 1,500 students—baccalaureate through doctoral—major in: classical, jazz and music theatre performance; music composition (jazz, film scoring, multi-media, and traditional), music technology, and music business; music ed, dance ed, and educational theatre education; performing arts administration; and music therapy and drama therapy guided by more than 400 faculty.
Founded in 1976, the NYU Steinhardt Music Business program prepares both graduate and undergraduate students to be leaders in the dynamic, global music marketplace. Academically rigorous and cross-disciplinary by definition, the Music Business course of study combines the boundless artistic resources of New York City with the cutting-edge inquiry and innovation of a major research university.
The curriculum includes a foundation in music theory and history as well as business, taught in collaboration with NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. In addition to providing structured courses, the curriculum promotes individual choices and development through an interactive classroom atmosphere, internships, participation in our record company, Village Records, and completion of research requirements.
- A doctoral degree in music, business, law, digital media, music technology or a closely related field conferred by the time the position starts.
- A demonstrated commitment to excellence in research as exemplified by scholarly publications and public speaking.
- Experience in teaching and mentoring and public programming is required; experience in fundraising is desirable but not required.
