ICMP is the global trade body representing the music publishing industry worldwide.
ICMP’s membership comprises 64 national trade associations across Europe, North and South America, Africa, Australasia, the Middle East and Asia, as well as the leading Major and Indie music publishing companies around the world.
Among ICMP’s missions are to serve its members’ interests as a global network; defend the copyright of the world’s songs and compositions as well as that of our members’ songwriter and composer partners; advocate to international institutions; realise an optimum legal environment for the music sector; consolidate global positions on music industry issues.
Role outline
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast paced and global trade body which works across many international institutions and companies.
The issues involved are complex, sensitive, fascinating and topical. They are set primarily in legislative, commercial or political contexts.
The role is based in our European Office in Brussels, multi-faceted and with a global remit. Commencing ideally by October.
The role also includes scope for advocacy and public representation of the organisation.
Main responsibilities
- Working in close conjunction with the ICMP Director General to analyse, draft, compile and present ICMP’s legal positions, publications and agreements.
- A key contributor to ICMP policy formulation.
- Working on behalf of our global membership to deliver first-class legal analysis, counsel and materials relevant to legislative and regulatory developments, government relations, market disputes which affect our work within the music industry.
- Debriefing ICMP’s national, regional, global and commercial members on issues of interest.
- Public representation and serving as a voice for our industry (dependent upon experience).
- Institutional relations: the role will involve advocacy in relevant legislative, political and governmental institutions worldwide (dependent upon experience).
- Monitoring of, reporting and acting on legal and regulatory developments worldwide e.g. European Union legislation, WIPO, national laws, market changes.
- Co-responsibility for liaising and coordinating with ICMP’s international members and structure.
Required academic qualifications
- An internationally recognised Bachelor (BA) degree in Law.
- Post-graduate (or academic points equivalent) qualification in law or relevant other.
- Background in Intellectual Property law, with specialism in copyright.
- Qualifications or experience in competition law are competitive advantages.
Professional skills
The successful applicant will have:
- A minimum of 5 years’ professional experience working in a relevant firm, company, industry association, public authority or relevant professional environment.
- Demonstrable professional expertise in intellectual property law, specialising in copyright.
- A ‘delivery’ mindset and proven ability to multitask complex issues.
- An uncompromising eye for detail.
- The highest standards of discretion and confidentiality.
- A high level of initiative, with proven experience of conceptualising and implementing projects.
- A drive to make a central contribution to a growing organisation.
- First class time management skills. Particularly able to work to tight deadlines.
- Able to work independently, but also a team player with our public affairs and events staff.
- An established network of relevant professional contacts.
- A genuine passion for music, culture and actively defending the rights related to the world’s music.
Language and communication skills
Impeccable written and spoken skills in English are essential. Proficiency in other languages (particularly French, German or Spanish) would be a competitive advantage.
Initial outline of terms
- Negotiable based on experience.
- The contract will be full time, open-ended and the terms of employment will be as a service agreement.
- Prospects for progression and promotion.
- A compensation package including holiday pay and performance-related bonuses.
- Travel required on occasion (sometimes at short notice; both short and long distance).
