Birthday Cake Records – Label Manager (US)

Birthday Cake Records is looking for a Label Manager to help take its rapid growth to the next stage.

Birthday Cake Records is an indie record label that, in just over two years, has established itself as a trusted release partner for groundbreaking artists who are having global success. We have an entrepreneurial environment where we nurture, develop, and promote our artists’ careers.

The ideal candidate has experience in the music industry at a label, distributor, marketing, or management firm. They are a driven individual with the ability to juggle projects and competing priorities, while meeting deadlines. Strong communication is essential, as they have to liaise with a range of people and ensure everyone is kept on the same page. Clarity, honesty, and responsiveness are key. The confidence and capacity to make decisions, manage information, and coordinate plans, timelines, proposals, applications, and reports is important.

The Label Manager will have the overall responsibility for all label operations. They will be directly involved in nearly every aspect of the label’s business. They will guide musical projects all the way from the early planning stage into the marketplace. They will be proactive in coming up with creative ways to build artists’ careers and develop the label’s international profile. They will manage a growing team and relationships with outside promo partners. They will work with Birthday Cake’s executive team to develop and maintain key global partnerships.

  • Ensure our artists’ best interests are represented at all times
  • Oversee all aspects of record label functions, including A&R, grant writing, marketing, distribution, PR, Radio promotion, advertising, social media, royalty registrations, content creation, and more.
  • Hire team members, PR, radio, and other third party teams
  • Work with marketing teams to help prepare, plan, and manage marketing and media campaigns to maximize key opportunities
  • Coordinate, schedule, and promote label releases
  • Develop, maintain, and circulate the label release schedule
  • Build relationships with artists and their teams, work proactively on their campaigns, and ensure they are kept up to date on all aspects of their releases, marketing activities, and results
  • Maintain dialogue with our distribution partner in order to keep DSP Partners updated on campaigns with a view of continuing to forge our own direct relationships
  • Initiate and chair regular label planning meetings
  • Discover and foster relationships with emerging artists and management teams
  • Build a sense of community amongst our label artists and team
  • Networking and creating opportunities for artists and the label
  • Regularly keeping tools up to date: project trackers, databases, shared drives, etc.
  • Writing and administering grant proposals and reports well in advance of deadlines
  • Maximize catalog revenue
  • Organized – able to juggle projects and competing priorities, meet deadlines and keep an eye on the bigger picture
  • Happy to carry out own administration
  • Diplomatic – able to maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Comfortable leading teams, motivating people, applying pressure, setting boundaries, and managing expectations
  • Comfortable working independently and asking for help when needed
  • Sound judgement and tested decision making skills
  • A very strong communicator, both verbal and written
  • Meticulous, organized, with a keen eye for detail
  • Self driven, highly motivated, and proactive
  • Open to feedback and coaching
  • A team player with leadership qualities
  • Able to work flexibly across different time zones to help service our international artists and teams

  • 3+ years working in the music industry at a record label, music distributor, music marketing, or artist management firm
  • Strong understanding of the recorded music marketplace
  • Project management experience

We have a flexible workspace in the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg that you’re welcome to use, though you’re also welcome to work remotely. (Note: our office is located on the third floor of a heritage building up three large flights of stairs.)

This is a full-time salaried position with a benefits package. This position will require some after-hours activity, such as attendance at shows and travel to conferences, festivals, and showcases.
