Italy gets new anti-piracy regulation

The Italian Communication Authority (AGCOM) has approved a new regulation intended to fight digital piracy.

The regulation aims to trigger the prompt shut down of all websites that offer illegal content.

There will be no legal repercussions for consumers who use torrent sites – the regulation is aimed solely at harming the illegal piracy industry that carries ads on torrent sites.

“We have been working hard for over three years to reach this point,” says Paolo Franchini (pictured), Secretary General of Italian music publishing association Federazione Editori Musicali (FEM).

“We produced the very first Italian anti-piracy video featuring the most prominent and influential artists and composers in the country and have consistently done our utmost to be a positive force for the entire cultural community.”

The Regulation comes into force in March 2014. The anti-piracy committee of music publishing trade body ICMP offered its congratulations on the good news.
