Has Three Six Zero just launched its own label in partnership with Sony?

Three Six Zero, best known as the LA-based management house of Calvin Harris, Tiësto and others, appears to have launched its own record label.

The company has been making noise in Hollywood circles of late with its upcoming movie, Vox Lux, which stars Natalie Portman and Jude Law and opens in cinemas in December.

The picture tells the fictional story of Celeste, a music artist played by Portman, who finds fame during childhood by singing at a memorial service following a school tragedy.

In the movie, this performance goes viral – catapulting Celeste to worldwide superstardom, with all of the downsides and insecurities which accompany it. Jude Law plays her long-term manager.

Of particular interest to the music industry will be Vox Lux’s soundtrack, performed by Portman in character, which has been penned by none other than superstar songwriter Sia.

That soundtrack is released on December 14 and – here comes today’s big music biz news – will arrive on Three Six Zero Records via Sony’s Columbia Records.

Three Six Zero founder Mark Gillespie is credited as an Executive Producer of Vox Lux, which is directed by Brady Corbet.

This isn’t the first time TSZ has launched a record label: the company teamed up with Warner Bros back in 2014 to release The Prodigy’s new music in the USA, but this Warner partnership is believed to have ended some time ago.

The question now is whether Three Six Zero Records is partnering with Sony as a one-off for Vox Lux, or whether this represents a new chapter for the company and Gillespie – working long-term in tandem with the Rob Stringer-led Sony Music.

MBW contacted Gillespie to ask, but he could not be reached at time of publication.

Management companies launching their own record labels is becoming something of a trend in 2018: earlier this year, UK-based TaP Management (Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey) announced the arrival of its own internal recorded music operation, while hiring a trio of respected London-based execs in Hannah Neaves, Anna Neville and Tony Beard.Music Business Worldwide
