Spotify accelerates plans to launch its own hardware with hiring effort

Spotify is on the way to creating its first physical products, according to a job ad for an Operations Manager – Hardware Product.

The role will “contribute in the creation of innovative Spotify experiences” via connected hardware, and was first spotted by Music Ally.

It expands upon a listing last year for a Senior Product Manager for Hardware to create a “category-defining product akin to Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo, and Snap Spectacles”.

According to the new ad, the physical products will be something that has an impact on “the way the world experiences music”.

Could that have something to do with voice activation?

There are also separate new Spotify job ads for a Senior Project Manager: Hardware Production and Project Manager: Hardware Production & Engineering.

Last year, the firm was also looking for a Product Manager – Voice to be responsible for the strategy and execution of voice efforts beyond its core apps.

The streaming service is currently in the process of setting up an operational organisation for manufacturing, supply chain, sales and marketing.

Based in Stockholm, the Operations Manager role requires significant operations management experience working closely with hardware and software development operating at a global scale.

That operational organisation will also be boosted by Senior Project Manager: Hardware Production and Project Manager: Hardware Production and Engineering currently being advertised.

Alongside a renewed focus on live events in the US, the hardware push arrives ahead of Spotify’s direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange that’s expected at the end of March, when the service will likely need to prove to investors that it has a viable long-term business model that’s not overly reliant on one thing.
