German music biz title Musikmarkt is shutting down after 57 years

Historic German music business title Musikmarkt is closing down, with its last issue due in July, MBW understands.

The magazine has been in circulation for 57 years in the region, but is being shuttered as owner GmbH & Co KG blames the “economic situation” for leaving it financially nonviable.

Musikmarkt’s website will also be closed as part of the move, leaving rival MusikWoche as the only recognised German language B2B music title in the territory.

A note to staff (translated) from Musikmarkt’s publisher reads: “Despite many innovations, many new ideas and the permanent adaptation to market developments, the economic situation means the continuation of the title is no longer [viable].”

The well-respected publication was first launched in 1959.

The news of its closure was confirmed by Stefan Zarges, editor in chief at GmbH & Co KG.Music Business Worldwide
