Facebook expands availability of fan subscription and tipping tools

Facebook has expanded the availability of two of its creator monetization methods, fan subscriptions and ‘Stars’ to more markets.

The news was announced in a blog post published on Monday (June 29) by Facebook Product Marketing Director Yoav Arnstein, and Head of Creator & Publisher Experience Jeff Birkeland and first reported by TechCrunch.

The expansion of Facebook’s creator monetization tools follows April’s news that the platform would start allowing owners of Pages “to charge for access to events with Live videos on Facebook – anything from online performances to classes to professional conferences”.

Firstly, according to the post, creators that meet Facebook’s eligibility criteria can now make money from fan subscriptions in markets including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

To be eligible, a creators’ Facebook page has to be followed by at least 10,000 people or have over 250+ return viewers and either 50,000 post engagements or 180,000 watch minutes in the last 60 days.

Creators can check if their page is eligible or not in the Montization section of Creator Studio and pages that haven’t used one of Facebook’s monetization products yet have to go through a review process.

The way fan subscriptions work is that a creator’s supporters pay a fixed price every month and in return they receive special benefits such as exclusive content, exclusive live videos or offer discounts.

Subscribers also receive a “supporter badge” that appears next to their name on comments they post but this can be removed by the supporter at any time.

Creators receive payouts once a month after they cross a minimum balance of $100 and  according to Facebook, funds will be paid out roughly 60 days after the end of each month.

Meanwhile, Facebook has also expanded access to creators in Australia, Canada, Columbia, India, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the US.

“Stars” is Facebook’s virtual tipping feature, which fans can buy and send to creators in a video’s comments section.

“Stars are a great way to monetize live streams and get rewarded for building a loyal fan base,” states Facebook’s blog post.

Creators can now set a “Stars goal” that appears as a permanent overlay in videos and Facebook has also added additional Stars management tools to Creator Studio.

“To better support our partners, we’re improving the tools that help creators earn money and manage their presence on Facebook.”

“Now more than ever, creators, video publishers and media are using Facebook to build a meaningful community and business,” said Facebook Product Marketing Director Yoav Arnstein, and Head of Creator & Publisher Experience Jeff Birkeland.

“We’re seeing the traditional notion of a creator evolve as comedians, artists, fitness instructors, athletes, small businesses and sports organizations use video and online events to connect with their audience.
