Deezer signs strategic partnership with Brazilian Netflix rival Globoplay

France-born audio streaming service Deezer and Brazilian video streaming provider and Netflix rival Globoplay have signed a new strategic partnership.

The deal will allow all Globoplay users to subscribe to Deezer Premium for free for 12 months, with a reduced monthly price after that.

Globoplay, Brazil’s largest home-grown video streaming service, was launched by media giant Globo in 2015 and has 30m users across its paid and ad-supported tiers, according to Deadline.

Deezer, which reports to have 16 million monthly active users globally, says that the deal marks “the first step in a broader strategic partnership that will cover marketing, content and technology”.

The next steps of the partnership will bring Brazilian viewers a number of new exclusive original content initiatives, according to Deezer, and the two companies are also exploring plans for deeper integration between video and audio entertainment.

As of January this year, Globoplay expanded into the audio business with the launch of a dedicated hub for online audio content.

Via partnerships with independent providers like B9, Globoplay has added a number of podcasts like Mamilos and Braincast to its portfolio.

Projetos Humanos, a Brazilian news podcast presented by journalist Ivan Mizanzuk, is also currently available on the platform.

Elsewhere, Globoplay’s first original podcast À Mão Armada, produced and narrated by journalist Sônia Bridi, will be available exclusively to customers on G1 and Deezer.

The new partnership also provides Deezer with what it says are “attractive commercial opportunities” at Globo. The global audio streaming service has been confirmed as a strategic partner of the 2021 edition of The Voice Brasil.

“Deezer and Globoplay’s brands and ethos are closely aligned and look forward to bringing Brazilian consumers a diverse and powerful entertainment experience.”
