SM Entertainment was the subject of a flurry of music industry media headlines in 2023, as rival HYBE made a hostile takeover play for the Korean company.
HYBE took control of a minority stake in SM following that battle, but subsequently sold its entire position to Tencent Music Entertainment in a deal worth nearly $180 million.
As of June 30, 2025, the largest private stakeholder in SM Entertainment was Kakao (and subsidiary, Kakao Entertainment), followed by Tencent Music Entertainment.
