Concord Music buys UK-based label Independiente

Concord Music has acquired London-based record label Independiente.

Formed in 1997, Independiente Records was founded by respected British exec Andy Macdonald, who previously created and built Go! Discs.

Independiente’s catalog is home to artists such as Travis, Embrace, So Solid Crew, Archive, Martina Topley-Bird and Paul Weller, among many others.

Travis achieved global recognition and success with the 1999 release The Man Who, which reached No.1 on the UK Chart and sold over 3.5 million records world-wide. Additionally, it was named Best Album of 2000 at the BRIT Awards.

Travis’ 2001 follow-up, The Invisible Band, also reached No.1 on the UK Chart with the radio hits Sing and Flowers in the Window.

Independiente also found No.1 UK Chart success with Embrace and their two albums, Out of Nothing (2004) and This New Day (2006).

So Solid Crew’s 21 Seconds hit No.1 in the UK in 2001.

“Being able to bring the recordings of Travis, Paul Weller, Embrace, So Solid Crew, Archive and many others to Concord Music is a responsibility we take very seriously,” explained Steve Salm, Concord Music’s Chief Business Development Officer.

“Andy developed and created a truly unique roster of artists at Independiente and we look forward to developing the next chapter of marketing, promoting and managing these works of art for the artists who created them.”

Independiente’s Andy Macdonald commented, “It was very important to me to hand over this collected body of work to a label who both understands and respects the work that has been put in from the artists and label staff and it was immediately apparent from our meetings with Scott [Pascucci] and Steve that they tick both of those boxes and more.

“Concord Music has assembled a fantastic universe of brilliant music over the years and I am proud to see Independiente become an important part of that picture.”

“It’s a great honor to be able to work with the incredible music and artists that Independiente signed and developed over the years,” stated Sig Sigworth, President of Concord Music’s catalog division, Craft Recordings. “We are very excited to dig into this catalog to identify new and unique ways to continue the artists’ legacies and support their fans.”

Concord Music’s master recording portfolio contains more than 12,000 active albums and 388 titles that have been certified by the RIAA as either gold, platinum, multi-platinum or diamond.

Concord Music’s active labels – Concord Records, Fantasy Records, Fearless Records (including Razor & Tie), Loma Vista Recordings, Rounder Records, Varèse Sarabande and Kidz Bop – collectively release more than 100 new recordings per year.

Concord last month announced the acquisition of Latin music company Fania, which owns approximately 19,000 master recordings and 8,000 compositions.Music Business Worldwide
