CNN acquires content personalization and discovery startup Canopy

CNN has acquired the assets and hired the development team of Brooklyn and Boston based content personalization and discovery company, Canopy.

CNN says that the move will accelerate its development of “NewsCo” – the project name for a new news and information platform that the press release states will connect “users to trusted sources, storytellers and creators across a wide range of topics”.

Launched in 2018, Canopy combines human curation, on-device machine learning and differential privacy to ensure the best discovery experiences while protecting personal data on users’ devices.

The company is led by founder and CEO Brian Whitman and is made up of a team of 15 execs with backgrounds at Spotify, Instagram, Google, Twitter and Flipboard.
