Mushroom Music Publishing has struck a deal to sub-publish fellow independent and New-York based Atlas Music Publishing for Australia and New Zealand.

Under the new partnership, Mushroom will administer works by Van Halen, Counting Crows (pictured) and John Legend, as well as songwriters including Alex Vargas, Toby Gad and Coyle Girelli.

The move sees Atlas founder and CEO Richard Stumpf back in business with Mushroom, having previously worked together while he was heading up creative at Cherry Lane.

“Reuniting with Ian, Zoe and the Mushroom team is like a return to family. These guys know the work it takes to get things done.”

Stumpf said: “Reuniting with Ian, Zoe and the Mushroom team is like a return to family. These guys know the work it takes to get things done.

“I recall a decade ago, when I ran Cherry Lane’s creative, going to one of those classic 1am SXSW showcases off the beaten path to see a new band.

“You know, the one you almost skip. Lo and behold, who was standing right next to me – the head of Mushroom Music, Ian James.

“The band – The Temper Trap! That’s a guy who gets what it takes to be successful. I’m happy to be back home!”

James added: “We are thrilled to be once again working with our friend and colleague Rich and his team at Atlas.

“As publishing companies continue to be bought and sold, it’s vital that the remaining independents unite to strengthen our position in what is a very competitive market place.”

“Personal relationships in the music industry are as important as ever and having a fond history with not only Rich, but a number of his Atlas staff, has been integral to our paths crossing again.

“As publishing companies continue to be bought and sold, it’s vital that the remaining independents unite to strengthen our position in what is a very competitive market place.”

Established in 1972, Mushroom Music Publishing is part of Michael Gudinski’s Mushroom Group of companies.

The firm sub-publishes several music catalogues as well as domestic songwriters including Vance Joy, Kylie Minogue, Nick Murphy (FKA Chet Faker), Gordi, DMA’s, Amy Shark and D.D Dumbo.

Founded by Stumpf in 2013, Atlas Music Publishing currently represents songs performed by artists including Madonna, Al Green, Booker T. and the MG’s, Otis Redding, John Legend, Sam Hunt, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, Dr. Dre, BJ the Chicago Kid, T.I., Justin Bieber and Tori Kelly.
