Apple Music lands exclusive TikTok partnership to bring full-song streaming into social app

Apple Music subscribers will officially be able to play full-length tracks they discover on TikTok without leaving the social app, following the launch of a new integration between the two platforms.

TikTok says that the feature, called ‘Play Full Song,’ is rolling out globally over the coming weeks and is available exclusively to Apple Music subscribers.

When a user discovers a song on TikTok’s For You Page or Sound Detail Page, a button prompts them to open an Apple Music player within the app.

From there, they can continue into a personalized stream of recommended songs, save them to ‘Your Music’, or add them directly to existing Apple Music playlists.

The integration is built on Apple‘s MusicKit framework, which means full-length playback occurs within Apple Music. Streams count as paid plays within Apple Music, keeping royalty flows for artists and rightsholders via Apple Music.

Users who are not yet Apple Music subscribers will be directed to sign up for a three-month free trial when they tap Play Full Song, making the feature a subscriber acquisition tool as well as a discovery integration.

The move positions TikTok as a direct funnel for Apple Music sign-ups, giving Apple a potential conversion pathway inside one of the world’s most popular apps that no rival streaming service currently has.

The partnership builds on an existing relationship between Apple Music and TikTok. Before TikTok’s ‘Add to Music App’ feature rolled out, Apple Music introduced a tool for sharing tracks to TikTok from its app.

TikTok’s Add to Music App tool has been used to save over 3 billion tracks to music streaming services to date.

Add to Music App is available for users of Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Anghami, SoundCloud, Deezer, Melon, and TIDAL. Play Full Song goes a step further than a playlist save, however — and unlike Add to Music App, is exclusive to Apple Music.

Alongside Play Full Song, the two companies are also introducing ‘Listening Party,’ which creates a shared listening environment inside TikTok where fans can hear songs from an artist in real time, interact with each other, and engage directly with the artist during the session.

“With Play Full Song, Apple Music subscribers can move easily from discovering a track on TikTok to listening to it in full instantly, without breaking the flow.”

Ole Obermann, Apple Music

Apple Music’s Ole Obermann said: “Tapping into the music you love should feel effortless.

“With Play Full Song, Apple Music subscribers can move easily from discovering a track on TikTok to listening to it in full instantly, without breaking the flow.”

“Thanks to Apple Music, Play Full Song gives fans a seamless way to go from discovery to full-length listening, and Listening Party provides a shared place to experience music together in real time.”

Tracy Gardner, TikTok

Obermann said: “This integration not only makes it easier for fans to discover, listen to, and engage with the artists they love, but also creates a powerful new pathway for artists – turning moments of discovery into deeper connection and sustained engagement in one simple, seamless experience.”

Obermann joined Apple Music last year after spending time at TikTok since 2019 as Vice President, Global Head of Music. Obermann previously served in various senior digital roles at Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment.

Tracy Gardner, Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok, added: “TikTok is where music discovery and culture move at the speed of the community.”

“Thanks to Apple Music, Play Full Song gives fans a seamless way to go from discovery to full-length listening, and Listening Party provides a shared place to experience music together in real time. It’s all about bringing artists and fans closer, and turning shared moments into lasting connections.”

The latest announcement confirms a report by Apple-focused news website 9to5Mac in February about the new Play Full Song and Listening Party features.

Elsewhere at Apple, the company’s Shazam music recognition platform earlier this week partnered with OpenAI to allow ChatGPT users to identify songs within the app using Shazam.
