Amazon offers Music Unlimited to Prime Student members for $0.99

Amazon Prime Student members can now subscribe to Amazon’s Music Unlimited premium subscription tier for an additional $0.99 per month.

Starting today (August 6), existing Prime Student members can add on the Amazon Music Unlimited offer to their monthly or annual Prime Student membership plan for $0.99 a month.

College students who aren’t Prime members can also sign up for a six-month free trial and take advantage of the new music offer. A Prime Student subscription then costs $6.49 per month after the trial.

According to Amazon’s website, the free Prime Student six-month trial is “courtesy of Sprint”, the fourth largest telco in the US with 54.5 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2019.

In May, Reuters, citing two sources, reported that Amazon is interested in buying Sprint Corp and T-Mobile US, the third largest cell phone carrier in the US with 83.1m subscribers at the end of Q2 2019.

Amazon Music rival Spotify announced yesterday (August 5) that it has entered into a partnership with AT&T (the largest telco in the US with 159.7m subscribers) to offer select AT&T customers long-term premium subscriptions for free.

Amazon’s play for student subscribers follows last month’s news that the company’s music streaming service is growing at a faster rate than its rivals.

“With Prime Student, members can enjoy this new music benefit along with exclusive student offers throughout the year, making it easy to access the best of shopping and entertainment from Prime at a great value.”
