5 Seconds of Summer rule US Top 40 radio in ‘huge achievement’ for UK-signed act

5 Seconds Of Summer have just posted two weeks at No.1 on US Top 40 radio, in what the band’s UK-based team calls a “huge achievement… in a current radio climate dominated by rhythmic records”.

5SOS made history in the States this summer by becoming the first ever band to see their first three full-length studio albums reach No.1 on the Billboard chart in the Nielsen era.

Now, with smash single Youngblood, the Australian band have done it again – pipping the likes of Post Malone’s Better Now, Maroon 5’s Girls Like You and Khalid & Normani’s Love Lies to the top radio chart spot for the past fortnight.

5SOS, signed to Capitol Records UK for the world, become the first Australian band in 21 years to hit No.1 on Top 40 in the States – the last was Savage Garden back in 1997.

“The band have stuck to their guns made a brilliant record and deserve all the success they currently enjoying.”

Nick Raphael, Capitol Records UK

“It is a huge honour and achievement for 5 Seconds of Summer to have a No.1 record at Top 40 Radio in America,” says Capitol Records UK co-President Nick Raphael. “This is their first in three albums and the feat is even greater in the current radio climate dominated by rhythmic records. ‎

“The band have stuck to their guns made a brilliant record and deserve all the success they currently enjoying.

“This latest achievement for the guys in the US could not have happened without their brilliant team at Modest!, the wonderful Universal International department and Steve’s marvellous team at Capitol US – especially Greg Marella and his entire department.”

Capitol’s UK, US and global teams work very closely with 5SOS’s long-term management, London-based Modest!.

Modest!’s Will Bloomfield, Harry Magee and Richard Griffiths first started working with 5SOS in early 2012, developing the artist during their early stages in tandem with Matt Emsell – the LA-based exec and Wonder founder who continues to co-manage the act.

Modest! picked 5SOS as the surprise support act for One Direction’s huge Take Me Home world tour which ran from February to November 2013, after which the Sydney-based group’s signing to Capitol UK was announced.

“No-one has worked harder this year, or indeed the past five years, than 5 Seconds of Summer.”

Richard Griffiths, Modest!

Richard Griffiths, Modest! Management co-founder, said: “The success of 5SOS, not only in the US, but around the world, proves several things.

“Firstly ,The public know a hit record when they hear it! Secondly, hard work pays off and no-one has worked harder this year, or indeed the past five years, than 5 Seconds of Summer. And thirdly, that you need great partnership between the artist, the record company and management.

“It’s not a coincidence that Modest! has enjoyed huge worldwide success for many years working with Steve, Nick and Jo and the amazing Universal international teams.”

“This achievement is unheard of for a rock’n’roll band in the current musical climate.”

Steve Barnett, Capitol Music Group

And Steve Barnett, CEO & Chairman of Capitol Music Group in Hollywood, said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled that 5SOS has hit No.1 on the Top 40 chart in the U.S.

“This achievement is unheard of for a rock’n’roll band in the current musical climate, and we couldn’t be prouder that the band has earned this No.1 while staying true to their course and furthering their evolution as a great young band.”Music Business Worldwide
