Spotify introduces lyrics but phases out third-party apps on desktop

Users of Spotify‘s desktop service will now be able to read the lyrics of the songs they play, thanks to a new integration with Musixmatch.

The addition is part of a new update to Spotify’s desktop service that also brings improvements to Spotify’s Friend Feed, as well as the introduction of daily viral charts and region-based playcounts in the platform’s chart section.

However, the update – being rolled out in the next few weeks – will see the phasing out of third-party applications from Spotify’s desktop client.

A new Lyrics button, located next to the play bar, has been designed to give users an area to help them to “start singing along”. Lyrics can also be searched and browsed using the platform’s Explore feature.

“We’re excited to bring an update to one of our key platforms – one that makes the experience smoother and introduces some great features and integrations” says Dave Price, Director of Product at Spotify.

“Following in the footsteps of previous successful app integrations such as Songkick, we’re thrilled to bring desktop listeners such a sought-after feature as lyrics”.

Musixmatch becomes an integrated Spotify partner like Topspin and BandPage before it.

Spotify also works with brands including BBC Playlister, Swarm, Digster, Filtr and more.Music Business Worldwide
