Music rights advocate to join SiriusXM as Director of Music Licensing

Music rights advocate Casey Rae is leaving behind his role as Future of Music Coalition CEO to join US satellite radio giant SiriusXM as Director of Music Licensing.

There’s few details about his new role, but one would assume Rae will be responsible for negotiating licenses with labels for the use of their catalogues on SiriusXM.

According to Billboard, he starts on June 6.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve for a decade at FMC. The organisation is shaped and sustained by our community, as I have been. I thank you.”

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve for a decade at FMC,” said Rae. “The organisation is shaped and sustained by our community, as I have been. I thank you.”

Board of Directors president Dick Huey will serve as interim CEO at FMC during the transition, assisted by fellow directors Ken Umezaki and Vicki Nauman.

The Future of Music Coalition exists to support “a musical ecosystem where artists flourish and are compensated fairly and transparently for their work.”

Rae has been an advocate of fair pay for artists in the digital age during his work with the non-profit organisation.

In a 2015 op-ed in Billboard, he wrote that without better systems in place to make sure artists get paid, “we will have squandered the potential of a truly global music industry built on great content and innovative delivery systems.

“Artists will lose, fans will lose, services will lose — even the big music companies will lose.”

Rae isn’t the only one switching sides of the business this week; Francis Keeling used to negotiate hard with digital services to get the best deal possible for Universal Music Group.

Now the widely respected digital exec is joining Spotify’s London office as VP, Global Head Of Licensing on June 1.Music Business Worldwide
