Apple Music gets more focus from Eddy Cue in company reshuffle

Apple has shuffled its senior staff, promoting Jeff Williams to Chief Operating Officer and expanding the role of Phil Schiller, SVP of Worldwide Marketing, to include management of the App Store across all platforms.

For the music business, it’s the latter appointment that’s the more intriguing – and potentially good news.

Eddy Cue (pictured), Apple’s President of Internet Software and Services, is a busy man.

As well as heading up Apple Music, he also looks after iCloud, Siri, Apple Pay and other products.

Schiller will now take control of the App Store off Cue, inevitably freeing up his time to give more focus to his other pursuits – including the continual improvement of Apple Music.

Meanwhile, there are new appointments at the Cupertino giant: in Q1 2016, Tor Myhren joins Apple from Grey Group, where he has served as chief creative officer and president of Grey New York.

“Phil is taking on new responsibilities for advancing our ecosystem, led by the app store.”

Tim Cook, Apple

He becomes vice president of Marketing Communications at Apple, and will be responsible for Apple’s advertising efforts.

New COO Jeff Williams steps up from his previous role of SVP, in which he led the Apple Watch project. Williams joined Apple in 1998.

“We are fortunate to have incredible depth and breadth of talent across Apple’s executive team. As we come to the end of the year, we’re recognizing the contributions already being made by two key executives,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“Jeff is hands-down the best operations executive I’ve ever worked with, and Johny’s team delivers world-class silicon designs which enable new innovations in our products year after year.”

Cook continued, “In addition, Phil is taking on new responsibilities for advancing our ecosystem, led by the App Store, which has grown from a single, groundbreaking iOS store into four powerful platforms and an increasingly important part of our business.

“And I’m incredibly happy to welcome Tor Myhren, who will bring his creative talents to our advertising and marcom functions.”Music Business Worldwide
